Ahmedabad

Two years living in a city that holds Corbusier, Kahn and Doshi within a few kilometres of a medieval pol quarter.

Why this city

Ahmedabad is where I did my M.Plan, which means I spent two years walking a city that almost nowhere else in India can match for range. Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn and B. V. Doshi all built here, within a few kilometres of a walled city whose pol housing has been working as climate-responsive, socially organised urban fabric for centuries.

The interesting thing is not that both exist. It is that the modernists were clearly reading the old city while they worked.

Each entry pairs a photograph with a reading of the structure — what it does, how it handles its climate and its site, and what a planner can take from it.
