Architectural Practice

Two years of design and construction documentation before planning — the drawing discipline that planning delivery still runs on.

Nagpur & Pune, Maharashtra · Feb 2019 – Jun 2023

Context

I came to planning from architecture, which is a common route and an underrated one. Planning documents are drawings before they are policy, and a planner who has produced construction documentation reads a drawing differently from one who has only ever specified one.

Mandate

Architect · Naval Zamwar & Associates, Nagpur (Jul 2021 – Jun 2023) — a mid-sized practice running architectural design and Project Management Consultancy assignments.

Intern Architect · Group PHI Architects and Designers, Pune (Feb 2019 – Sep 2019).

Approach

At Naval Zamwar & Associates I produced design and construction drawings in AutoCAD from concept through detail stage, across both architectural design and PMC assignments. I coordinated with lead architects, builders and consultants on live projects, working to project timelines and cost and schedule tracking.

PMC work in particular is where the gap between a drawing and a built thing becomes visible — and where coordinating consultants, contractors and a client to a schedule is the actual job. That is not far from what inter-agency coordination on a corridor project demands.

At Group PHI I produced detailed design and as-built drawings, preliminary 3D views and on-site coordination for mixed-use and lakeside villa projects.

Outcome

Two years in practice on a B.Arch base, carried into planning delivery as technical drawing and design documentation capability. It is why the CAD and documentation side of statutory planning work is not something I had to learn on the job.
